M. Night Shyamalan Talks Unbreakable Sequel

Unbreakable © Touchstone Pictures

While making his promotional rounds for Split, M. Night Shyamalan talked with EW about the possibility of finally doing a sequel to the unconventional superhero origin movie Unbreakable.

Before going any further… there WILL be SPOILERS for M. Night Shyamalan’s newest movie Split. Please don’t read any further if you haven’t seen Split!

With the ending of Split directly connecting to Unbreakable and Bruce Willis’ character David Dunn. Shyamalan was asked if Split will segue into an Unbreakable sequel to which he said:

I hope so. The answer is yes. I’m just such a wimp sometimes. I don’t know what’s going to happen when I go off in my room, a week after this film opens, to write the script. But I’m going to start writing.

He was then asked if an outline already existed.

Yeah, definitely. A really robust outline, which is pretty intricate. But now the standards for my outlines are higher. I need to know I’ve won already. I’m almost there but I’m not quite there.

Based on this interviews, it appears that Shyamalan has learned his lesson from his previous movie mistakes. He wants to make better films by building off of some of his previous hits.

Split2

As I stated in my article of Split Twist Explained, I would love to see Split lead into a huge Shyamalan Cinematic Universe, I’m just not sure if it’s something we should get.

Sometimes a film, no matter how much love is involved, fails to meet expectations. That’s where I jump in and break down “The Good,” “The Ehh” and “The Ugh-ly.” My purpose is to try to determine how the film succeeded and how it could have been better. I believe that this process can elevate the film industry and make the film going experience better for all.
